Our Story

MIke & Rosann StoryWine lovers following their dreams! Mike and Rosann Mitrione both had successful careers in Corporate America. Rosann spent 30 years in sales and marketing while Mike has spent his career in technology. But their true passion is wine! Their journey to turn a passion into a business started 10 years ago.

If you know anything about the wine industry, you know it’s a lot of work, takes a long time to go from the idea of growing your own grapes to actually producing good quality wine, and Mike and Rosann are determined to make high quality Texas wine! They planted their first grapes in the Texas HIgh Plains (Brownfield, Texas) in 2018.

In 2021 they relocated to Fredericksburg, TX from North Texas and purchased land for their winery tasting room and production facility. Construction should be completed in Summer 2023. They also planted their first grapes at that site in 2022. Rosann will be running the day-to-day business and focus on the tasting room while Mike will be focused on viticulture and winemaking along with our winemaker, Tim Drake.

Mike and Rosann have done what many people who dream of opening their own businesses do. Educated themselves (Rosann and Mike both have WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) Level 2 Certifications and have taken various wine industry classes), talked to experts, saved, made a plan, said a lot of prayers, and made the leap! They are so excited to see where this journey ends and to share the fruits of their labor with their customers. Success will be making great 100% Texas wine that can be enjoyed in a relaxing and welcoming environment at the winery or around your kitchen table!

Why Texas Wine?

Many people ask us about why we decided to open a winery in Texas. The answer is simple, Texas is a hidden gem for making outstanding wine. Most of wine created in Texas never leaves the state. Texas is home to four of the largest cities in the United States.

The Texas wine industry has experienced significant growth over the past few decades, as winemakers continue to refine their craft and produce award-winning wines. Texas wines have gained recognition in national and international wine competitions, showcasing the quality and diversity of the state’s wine production.

The Texas wine industry has a rich history and a growing presence in the United States. The history of winemaking in Texas dates back to the 1600s when Spanish missionaries planted the first vineyards in the region. However, it was in the 1970s when the modern Texas wine industry began to take shape, as pioneers started experimenting with different grape varieties and winemaking techniques to create high-quality wines. With over 400 wineries and over 5,000 acres of vineyards, Texas is the fifth-largest wine-producing state in the country. The industry contributes significantly to the state’s economy, with an estimated annual impact of over $13 billion.

Our winery is located in Fredericksburg, Texas, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. The Texas Hill Country is home to over 100 wineries, and the Fredericksburg area attracts an estimated 5 million visitors annually, making it the second-largest wine region in the United States.

TEXAS AMERICAN VITICULTURAL AREAS New

The Texas climate and terroir are well-suited for making exceptional wine.  There are currently eight American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in the state of Texas. At Michael Ros Winery, we aim only to produce wines grown in our personal vineyards. Today we grow grapes at our Texas High Plains and Texas Hill Country AVAs.

  • Texas High Plains AVA: Located in the northwest part of the state, it is the second-largest AVA in Texas and known for its high elevation, which provides cooler temperatures and a longer growing season. The region produces quality red and white wines from Southern Rhone, Bordeaux, and Italy. We currently operate a 27-acre vineyard in this AVA.
  • Texas Hill Country AVA: This is the largest AVA in Texas, covering a vast area of central Texas. With its rolling hills, warm climate, and diverse soil types, the region is well-suited for growing a wide range of grape varieties.  We currently operate a 10-acre vineyard in this AVA.
